A sea of green robes swam throughout the lobby of McIntyre Hall on Thursday, October 19th.

Spirits were high after the first choir concert of the season had just ended. Mount Vernon High School’s choir department presented an assortment of songs for the audience. The repertoire included oldies, folk songs, classical, and world music.

Concert Choir sang Esta Tierra, by Javier Busto, in memory of Sarai Lara. The song was moving for both the audience and choir. “I really liked Esta Tierra because it was really powerful given that it was dedicated to Sarai Larah. Yeah, I really enjoyed that piece a lot,” said senior Drew Shipman. “It was really powerful given that it was dedicated to Sarai Lara,” said senior Rachael Kerley.

Choir can bring people together, whether it’s the audience or the choir members themselves. The energy was very present on stage

“I feel like, the fact that you’re singing with other people really unites us together because in order to sound good, everyone kinda has to have the same quality, everyone has to be willing to change” said Eyad Alsilimy, junior.

Tyanna Whitman, junior, said “ I liked performing Unclouded Day the most. Because, I

don’t know, I just get really hyped up and it’s one of the fun songs we did.”

The new year has brought new choir members, particularly underclassmen.

“This year is full of a lot of underclassmen and it’s just being more prepared and working harder than most years.” said Kerley.

Students join for the music but also the community that the class brings.

“I feel like we’re more tight-knit this year because we went to retreat and we did all like “the family bonding” things, ” said Whitman. “I think choir is fun in the sense that you can be yourself and not have to worry about anybody judging you and like, you just make long lasting friends.” she added.

Concert Choir, the large mixed ensemble, will be traveling to Washington D.C. this spring. They will be performing at The Kennedy Center for performing Arts.
